Benvenuto

My name is Luke, let me introduce you to Endure Performance Psychology. If you want to book an appointment as soon as possible click here otherwise have a look around and let me know if you have any questions, I am here to help.

I hold registration as a Clinical Psychologist from the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and possess a strong passion for assisting athletes in their psychological well-being and performance goals.

I offer both mental health and mental performance intervention to a diverse range of athletes, encompassing those as young as fifteen and extending to adult athletes. Although my primary focus is on endurance athletes, I take pleasure in assisting individuals from a wide array of sports.

In this sense my work here is two fold:

  • #1: I work closely with athletes dealing with mental health difficulties. This encompasses addressing issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, body image, eating disorders, addiction, life transitions/adjustment difficulties, managing relationships, and combating burnout or the everyday stress of life. Ultimately, a content, emotionally stable athlete encounters fewer obstacles in achieving peak performance. In the grand scheme of things, I believe it's crucial to emphasise that your health and overall well-being take precedence above all else, even before performance.

  • #2: I work closely with athletes to enhance their mental skills and mindset for optimal performance. This can encompass strategies to boost focus, motivation, resilience, confidence, and composure under pressure. It also includes honing skills like goal setting, visualisation, and self-talk, as well as managing performance anxiety and improving overall mental toughness.

Ultimately, performance psychology aims to empower athletes to unlock their full potential and consistently deliver their best on the field or in their respective domains. In the grand scheme of athletic excellence, it's important to acknowledge that these mental skills are fundamental to achieving and sustaining high-level performance.

As an endurance athlete myself I particularly enjoy working with fellow endurance athletes and teams. You can read more about my background here

Here is a brief overview on what my work with endurance athletes might look like:

  • Specialisation: These services specifically cater to endurance athletes, understanding the unique demands and psychological challenges that come with competing in long-duration events. I have personal knowledge and experience which can be advantageous in addressing the particular needs of endurance sports.

  • Mental Skills Training:  Training in various mental skills, including goal setting, concentration, imagery and visualisation, motivation, self-confidence, and emotional regulation. These skills help athletes maintain focus and composure throughout extended time periods where many things can and do unravel.

  • Stress Management: We often face stress, adversity and anxiety, especially before important events. Helping athletes learn how to manage pre-race nerves, anxiety, and stress by teaching relaxation techniques and effective coping strategies for dealing with setbacks.

  • Psychological Assessment: We might undergo psychological assessments to identify your strengths and weaknesses. This evaluation helps develop a tailored mental training plan to address specific areas of improvement.

  • Performance Analysis: Services often involve analysing past performances and identifying mental obstacles (and successes) that may have impacted your performance. Learning from past experiences is a crucial part of mental preparation.

  • Race Preparation: Athletes are trained in strategies to mentally prepare for races or events. This includes developing pre-race routines, setting race-specific goals, and creating race plans that address various scenarios and challenges. Developing fast and effective problem-solving skills is of huge advantage in longer duration events.

  • Resilience and Mental Toughness: Endurance athletes must be mentally resilient to cope with physical fatigue and adversity. Helping athletes build mental toughness, enabling them to push through tough moments in races and training.

  • Injury Recovery and Rehabilitation: Assist athletes during periods of injury, as mental skills are essential to maintaining a positive attitude and commitment to rehabilitation.

  • Team and Group Workshops: I offer team or group workshops to foster group cohesion and shared mental training among athletes/teams.

  • Post-Race Analysis: After events, we evaluate and analyse performances, identify areas for improvement, and build on successes.

  • Personalised Support: I will work closely with you throughout the highs and lows, providing personalised support and care, whilst attending to your unique needs and goals.

  • Ethical Considerations: Ethical considerations are crucial in performance psychology, ensuring that athletes' mental health and well-being are prioritised, and the services provided are evidence-based and safe.
